Archdiocese of Vancouver ARCHBISHOP'S OFFICE
Saint John Damascene December 4, 2020
Dear Parishioners of Immaculate Conception Parish:
I am writing to share unhappy news about your former assistant pastor, Father Nelson Santos. Many of you have been wondering about his departure from ministry and his current status, and I am now able to answer some of those questions.
A thorough investigation carried out by a lawyer independent of the Archdiocese confirmed that a number of accusations of sexual misconduct with an adult by Father Santos were well-founded, along with related inappropriate behaviour and comments. As a result, Father Santos is not permitted to exercise any priestly ministry in the Archdiocese, now or in the future. Should he apply to work as a priest elsewhere, the local bishop would be informed of our investigation. He has also been ordered not to meet with members of parishes where he served.
I hoped very much to be with you at Immaculate Conception so that I could speak with you in person but the restrictions on Mass attendance have lasted longer than anticipated and show no signs of changing in the near future.
Father Santos' actions have caused harm to the community. For some they have caused deep suffering and pain. To all those who were harmed in any way, I express my deep sorrow. I pray that the good Lord will heal all those hurt by these actions.
If you wish to report any incident involving Father Santos, please contact the independent reporting office at (604) 363-7338. Thank you for your continued support of the parish and each other.
With cordial best wishes and the assurance of my prayers, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
* J. Michael Miller, CSB
